Schnapp, who plays Byers on the Netflix hit, recently revealed that since the show’s inception, his character has struggled to define his sexuality and feelings for Wheeler. “I mean, it’s pretty clear this season that Will has feelings for Mike,” Schnapp told reporters. “They’ve been intentionally pulling that out over the past few seasons. Even in season one, they hinted at that and slowly, slowly grew that storyline,” he said. “I think for season four, it was just me playing this character who loves his best friend but struggles with knowing if he’ll be accepted or not, and feeling like a mistake and like he doesn’t belong. Will has always felt like that. All his friends, they all have girlfriends and they all fit into their different clubs. Will has never really found anywhere to fit in.” Schnapp, confirming fans’ online conspiracies and theories around his character’s sexuality, continued to describe how the subtle hints throughout previous seasons was part of what made the role feel organic, genuine, and most importantly, relatable. “I think that’s why so many people come up to me and tell me that they love Will and they resonate with him so much, because it’s such a real character,” he told interviewers. While it’s currently uncertain if Schnapp’s character has any plans to come out in season five, it would certainly stir-up some drama for the friend group as Eleven (Mille Bobby Brown) and Mike seemed to be going strong this season. “I called them a few weeks ago and I was like, ‘What’s your plan with Will? Like, with his sexuality, but also with the Upside Down and all of that?’ They have a lot to get to. They’re still working it out, but they have their end goal,” Schnapp said. He also acknowledged that there’s a lot to address in terms of Will’s character-arc. “There’s so many different things they have to address. Obviously, we hope for a coming out scene, and I also want to see them address this connection to the Mind Flayer and how that fits into the world. And I’ve always been wondering, why was Will the first victim and the first one captured? I just want to see it all tie in and all work out. So I’m excited to see what happens.” Us, too, Schnapp, us too. As of writing, there is no official release date for season five of Stranger Things but here is everything we do know.
