In a statement, Buckingham Palace said, “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.” The couple were married for 72 years. The Duke of Edinburgh died just two months short of his 100th birthday on June 10. In November he and Queen Elizabeth II celebrated 73 years of marriage. The couple had been living at Windsor Castle since COVID caused a series of lockdowns in Britain beginning in March 2020. This spring Prince Philip spent 28 days at the hospital being treated for an infection, during which he underwent surgery for a pre-existing heart condition before returning home. The Guardian reports that flags are being lowered on landmark British buildings to mark the beginning of a period of mourning. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark in 1921. Shortly after his birth he and his family were exiled. He served in the British army in WWII and married Princess Elizabeth in 1947, going on to become the longest-serving consort in British history. The couple had four children, Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, eight grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. On February 20, Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank revealed that the name they chose for their newborn son—August Philip Brooksbank—included a tribute to Eugenie’s grandfather. Zara and Mike Tindall also honoured Zara’s grandfather Philip by giving their new baby—born in March—the name of Lucas Philip Tindall.
