The conversation about costumes inspired by the infamous murderer—who is known for engaging in disturbing actions with his victims’ bodies, including necrophilia, cannibalism and dismemberment—has surfaced this year in light of the harrowing popular new Netflix series Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which depicts the cruel killings that predominantly targeted gay men and boys of color. In the interest of respecting the victims’ families and being sensitive to the communities affected, internet users are now speaking out against tone-deaf Dahmer costumes for Halloween this year. “Please, to those celebrating Halloween, whatever you do. Do. Not. Dress. Up. As. Jeffrey. Dahmer,” another user tweeted. “PSA: Jeffrey Dahmer Halloween costumes are not cool. Let’s not glorify this very real serial killer who preyed on young LGBT men of color,” someone else wrote. Rapper Boosie BadAzz also took to Twitter to let his followers know that he will not be giving out candy to anyone dressed as Jeffrey Dahmer this Halloween, writing in part, “I LOVE THE KIDS BUT ALL ‘LITTLE DAHMERS’ PLEASE SKIP MY HOUSE.” Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles also vocalized her stand on the matter, tweeting on Tuesday, “im just gon go head and say it, put the jeffrey dahmer costumes back in the closet. we ain’t having it!!!!!!” Even Shirley Hughes, the mother of one of Dahmer’s victims, Tony Hughes, has come forward to denounce the “evil” and triggering costumes. “If Netflix hadn’t streamed the show…None of the families would be revictimized…and then there’d be no Dahmer costumes this year,” she stated, according to The Cut. As a result of the conversations online, eBay has also banned Jeffrey Dahmer costumes on their site for violating its policy on violence and violent criminals. In a statement made to Buzzfeed, the company claimed that the Jeffrey Dahmer costumes are “prohibited,” and have been removed in accordance with their policy that bans users from listing items that “promote or glorify violence.” While it’s unclear if more retail sites will take down their items involving the notorious murderer, it’s safe to say that plenty of people will be finding another costume idea for this year’s Halloween.
