If you feel the need to investigate if you’ve been blocked—be it a former friend, a disgruntled auntie, a high school classmate you haven’t seen since ‘08, or your ex—there are several telltale signs to look for in a classic FB blocking. How to tell if you’ve been blocked on Facebook:
How to Tell If Someone Blocked You on Facebook
Like many other social media platforms, Facebook does not notify you when someone has chosen to block you. For that reason, someone could block you without you even knowing. However, it’s not all that hard to find out the truth…
That person doesn’t show up on your friend’s list.
As a Facebook user, you have access to a list of all of your friends on the networking site. If you see that someone you thought you were friends with is very obviously missing from the list, it might be a sign that they’ve blocked you. If you do a search within your friends list and they are still not showing up, then they’ve definitely blocked you.
No results show up when you search their name.
Never forget when Kim Kardashian tried to look up Tristan Thompson on social media to give him a piece of her mind—only to find out that he had blocked her! (They’re on much better terms now, but still: an iconic moment.) Kim realized Thompson had blocked her because when she typed his name into the search bar, there were no results available. This is one of the easiest ways to tell if you have been blocked on Facebook by a specific person. While Facebook doesn’t display a list of all the people who have blocked you—although it allows you to access a list of all the people you have blocked—you can search each individual person to see if you’ve been blocked. If you search a person’s name and there are no results or their specific profile doesn’t show up in results, sorry, but you’ve been blocked.
Facebook won’t let you tag them in a post or photo.
If you don’t want to do too much snooping around, another easy test to see if you’ve been blocked is to try to tag the person (the accused, if you will) in a post or a photo. Generally, when you start typing someone’s name to tag them on Facebook, FB will auto-populate the rest of their name. If that doesn’t happen and the person’s name doesn’t show up at all, you can bet you’ve been #BLOCKED.
Facebook won’t let you message the person directly.
The whole point of blocking is not allowing there to be any communication between the two parties. So, if you type the accused’s name into Facebook Messenger, attempting to initiate a message, and their name won’t show up, that’s definitely sus. You may even get an error message that says “the user is unavailable.” They’re unavailable because they’ve blocked you.
The user profile is unavailable.
This brings us to: “Sorry, this content isn’t available right now.” If you try to directly go to the accused’s Facebook profile and instead, receive the above error message, you’re blocked. Again, they’re unavailable because they have chosen to not be available to you specifically. Yikes! Next up, expert tips on how to use Instagram like a pro.
