The original commercial first aired during an episode of Ugly Betty over a decade ago as a PSA for viewers to “think before you speak” in an effort “to reduce and prevent the use of homophobic language,” thereby creating more positive environments for LGBTQ+ teens. In the original, the How I Met Your Father star overhears a couple of other girls discussing the clothes they’re trying on in a store and elects to intervene, breaking down why they should be more careful with their choice of words. In the TikTok, Hoying and Manio play the shoppers, while Duff steps right back into her previous educational role. “Do you like this top?” Hoying lipsynced, holding a black piece of clothing up over his white tank and pretending to adjust it. “It’s so gay,” Manio’s character responded. “Really?” Hoying asked, looking disappointed as he looks down at it. Meanwhile, Duff looked affronted next to him. When Manio confirmed, “Yeah, it’s totally gay,” Duff’s jaw dropped. “You know, you really shouldn’t say that,” she interjected. “Say what?” Hoying looked confused. “Say that something’s ‘gay’ when you mean it’s ‘bad.’ It’s insulting,” she explained. The two didn’t look convinced, so she continued, breaking it down further. “What if every time something was bad, everybody said, ‘Ugh, that’s so girl wearing a skirt as a top?’” she asked, referencing one of the girls wearing a skirt like a tube top in the commercial. “Oh, you are,” the original character pointed out in the throwback version of the commercial. though Hoying didn’t lip-sync that part to Manio in the updated one. Instead, he put off while Manio’s character seemed to agree with Duff’s. “Those are cute jeans though,” she complimented before turning around and walking out of frame. The commercial ended with Duff’s voiceover asking, “When you say, ‘That’s so gay,’ do you realize what you say? Knock it off.” “@hilaryduff is truly an ICON for this 😭🌈,” Hoying captioned the TikTok, and commenters couldn’t agree more. “Legendary!” one wrote. “THIS IS SO ICONIC I’M GAGGING OMG,” exclaimed another. “a literal ICON she did this commercial when it could’ve been not so great for her career 😭😭😭😭,” someone else commented. Even Hulu agreed, “That ad was everythinggg”. “herstory,” another confirmed. You can watch the original commercial right here! More News:
