“The older I’ve gotten, I’ve realized the more humanity these kids can see in me, the more we’re going to connect,” Joanna, 44, said in a recent interview. “I want them to see the highs and lows, so when they’re feeling anxieties about school or relationships, they know it’s a safe place for them to come to me.” The husband and wife, who have been married since May 2003, are the proud parents of an impressively large brood of five children who’ve practically developed their own fan bases, thanks to all the adorable cameos they’ve made over their years on mom and dad’s signature renovation series, Fixer Upper. And yet, despite their on-screen appearances (which have showed them playing outside, helping out their dad on the family farm, or shopping, gardening and decorating with their mom) the Gaines kids have also managed to stay out of the spotlight for the most part while enjoying happily normal childhoods. Will the five little Gaineses follow in their HGTV alum parents’ footsteps? Get to know the next generation of the Gaines family with our guide to Chip and Joanna Gaines’ kids.

Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Kids
Drake Gaines
Firstborn child Drake is named after the Drake Hotel in New York City, where Chip and Joanna honeymooned. He’s a football fan and player, and Chip said in an episode of Fixer Upper that Drake has a great arm. He also films some of his mom’s Instagram videos! Joanna wrote in the fall 2022 issue of Magnolia Journal, “Soon, our oldest son, Drake, will be leaving home for college. In the grand scheme of heartbreaking things, this one comes with a lot of gratitude and excitement. But still, my first child is moving away, and our family dynamic will change because of it, and that can feel like a loss of its own.”
Ella Rose Gaines
Ella Rose takes a lot of inspiration from her mom. Joanna says that Ella wants to be a designer someday, and Ella also loves art. In October 2022, Joanna shared a video of decorations for Ella’s 16th birthday party—and tried her best not to cry!
Emmie Kay Gaines
Inheriting her green thumb from Joanna, Emmie Kay has her own set of plants and creates and sells her own floral arrangements. In November 2018, Joanna shared a poignant message in marker that Emmie had written on their bathroom vanity. (Don’t worry, it wasn’t permanent!) Emmie Kay also has her own cookie recipe, which Jo described as a blend of shortbread, chocolate chip and icing. Sounds delish!
Duke Gaines
Duke grows his own vegetables and prepares them with mom Jo. He also loves watching and playing baseball with dad Chip.
Crew Gaines
Chip and Joanna Gaines welcomed son Crew in June 2018. His four older siblings were really excited to meet him when he was born! Although he’s the littlest member of the brood, he’s great at keeping up with everyone—he’s even hit the slopes with his dad! Crew also joined Chip for a marathon. He also dutifully says goodnight to his plants on the regular, which—come on, how cute is this kid?! More recently, Crew has been keeping up with mom Jo and catching butterflies, pumping bike tires and more. She gushed of her youngest child, “This little guy makes life fun.”
What rules do Chip and Joanna Gaines have for their kids?
Somewhat surprisingly, Chip is the stricter parent of the two. He told PEOPLE, “I grew up in an environment that was pretty much ‘back by dark’—[my parents] didn’t generally know what we were doing, and it was all good, clean fun, so I thought, ‘Oh, I’m gonna be a wild parent.’ And when I got to be a parent, I don’t know what it is about it … I feel a little bit like a drill sergeant sometimes,” he admitted. “Some elements of my personality, as a parent, I’m not real crazy about.” Both he and Joanna limit their kids’ screen time and don’t have televisions at home—and insist their kids won’t have cellphones until college! She quipped to PEOPLE, “It’s funny, I’m a little more laid back than I thought I’d be. [There are] certain things that I really care about, but I think the funny part, with Chip, is just the video games, the TV. That’s where he kinda gets a little strict. It’s, ‘You go play outside.’ "
Has Chip Gaines been married before?
Nope! Joanna is his first and, at this point, only wife. He was however “hell-bent” on marrying someone else before he met Joanna, according to an essay he wrote in a 2017 issue of Magnolia Journal. “I felt convinced that Amy was the one,” he says. “I walked off that plane [on the way home from visiting her in London] hell-bent on making that young woman my wife.” As we all now know, things didn’t work out for Chip and Amy. He later met and married Joanna and the rest, as they say, is history.
Do Chip and Joanna Gaines’ kids like being on camera?
The Gaineses try to keep their kids out of the spotlight. While the children occasionally made cameos on Fixer Upper, they typically stay away from the cameras (but are often still on the set hanging out behind the scenes).
What do Chip and Joanna Gaines’ kids’ rooms look like?
The Gaines’ sons share one room, while their daughters share another. Joanna told Country Living of her sons’ room, “Duke likes to collect things, so you see all these boxes—he’s got a ton of collectibles. And then Drake is really into trophies and sports stuff, and he’s got his open shelves. It’s about giving them plenty of space for their stuff, but then also carving out something that displays what they love.” She had more of a challenge with the girls, each of whom had a different favorite color: Blue for Emmie and pink for Ella. Jo’s solution was to use neutrals but to use accessories in each of their favorite colors, explaining, “Once they feel like they can own their little space, that’s all they needed.” Joanna said that she likes to let her kids take the lead once she’s handled the basics. “I’ve gotten so much more laid back about kids’ rooms in general because, to me, that’s the space where they want to feel the most creative and the most known. And sometimes that means there’s certain things that you wouldn’t pick yourself,” she noted. “It’s nice to watch their rooms evolve into the things that they love.”
Do Chip and Joanna Gaines want more kids?
Chip and Joanna welcomed son Crew in 2018, but do they want to add to their family once more? Maybe! “We’re looking forward to what’s to come, and what’s to come, we have no idea,” Joanna told PEOPLE in 2018. “I think one thing about me and Chip is that we never like to look really far in advance and plan, that’s never been how we are. I joke with my friends that I’m going to be that 45-year-old who’s pregnant.” If it were up to Chip, though, the pair would have an entire army of kids. Joanna joked on TODAY, “When I’m 50, Chip’s going to want more kids. Just know, this is going to be the headline forever: ‘Jo’s pregnant. Again.’”
